Jorge Masvidal Open To Potential Nick Diaz Matchup: “I’d Love To Fight Nick. It’s A Classic Fight”
Former two-time UFC welterweight title challenger Jorge Masvidal would love a future matchup with former Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz.
Masvidal spoke with ESPN’s Marc Raimondi recently and discussed Diaz ahead of his Octagon return on September 25 at UFC 266 in a rematch against former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler. The fight will be Diaz’s first in nearly seven years and if he looks good against Lawler, Masvidal doesn’t see why he couldn’t be next for the Stockton, California native.
“If Nick looks good and does his job, why not me and Nick?” Masvidal said. “I’d love to fight Nick. It’s a classic fight. It’s a fight that I always wanted to do since I was at Strikeforce at 155 [pounds] and he was at 170. I was like, ‘Man, that’s a dude I would like to fight.’ Nothing personal, just because of his style. The way that he leaves it all out there. If I get a fight with Nick, it’ll be a blessing.”
The fight would make an immense amount of sense from a financial standpoint and given how both men are viewed within the pantheon of MMA fandom. Also, throw in the fact that Masvidal already has a third-round TKO win over Nate Diaz back at UFC 244 and you couldn’t write the script any better for a possible outing with Nick Diaz. However, Masvidal reiterated his immediate focus is getting back to a UFC welterweight title shot.
“The title is everything that’s on my mind,” Masvidal said. “Ideal scenario — I walk into the office and they go, ‘This individual can get you closer to the title than any other individual, and I go, ‘Give me that individual.’ And they offer it to me with a lot of money behind it. All these guys are corny. I don’t give a f— about them. I want to go for the title again. Whatever it takes to get to that title — whatever opponent, whatever threat, challenge. Whatever they want to come up for me to deal with it, I’m there to do it.”
