TAELER: The Rise Of The New WWE United States Champion Damian Priest
As alluded to in a previously excellent piece by Jeremy Lambert on Fightful.com, Damian Priest, your new United States Champion has opened up about his journey to championship gold on WWE After The Bell. Priest gets candid with the WWE Universe describing some vulnerable moments with some humble self reflections. He goes into honest detail on how his journey to the main roster led him to become more self-aware which ultimately provided him with the opportunity to learn from more experienced WWE Superstars. Those opportunities helped him grow in his own right as a WWE Superstar making him feel like a better more well-rounded version of himself and his onscreen persona. A more T.V. worthy WWE Superstar, if you will, than he was when he first transitioned to the main roster in January.
This past Monday was a coming out party as he defeated Drew McIntyre and Sheamus on Raw.
From when he left NXT in January making his way to the main roster Damian Priest raced through the competition on road to Wrestlemania and beyond on to his championship bout at SummerSlam. Damian Priest’s journey would lead him to defeat the former reigning U.S. Champion Sheamus at the biggest WWE PPV of the summer – SummerSlam. This career pushing win would mark a turning point for Priest’s tenure thus far on the main roster and is indicative of the time he’s spent learning valuable skills from fellow WWE Superstars The Miz, John Morrison, and even John Cena. Progress and initiative that clearly hasn’t gone unnoticed by WWE higher ups…
As I write this piece I’m reminded of a lesson I was once taught from NXT General Manager William Regal. He told us that there wasn’t an excuse for not being able to cut a good promo. That talking on the mic is a necessary skill if one wants to be a well-rounded, believable, pushable, and successful money making superstar in WWE. He went on to say that on any given day you are presented with numerous opportunities to practice promos and mic skills. And how much you put into your craft is direct reflection of how much you want ‘it.’ You either have ‘it’ or you don’t. And if you don’t you better pair yourself with someone who does. I never forgot that. As someone who loves talking on the mic and writing vignettes, I took that bit of wisdom to heart and ran with it. And as Pro Wrestler, Author, and avid fan of Pro Wrestling, I love seeing good people learn from the best in this business and succeed in it with their hard work resulting in the fruition of their dreams. In this case, that’s Damian Priest.
Damian Priest thriving under the guidance of and storylines with The Miz is exactly what you want from pairing an up-and-coming WWE Superstar with a charismatic money making WWE Superstar like The Miz. Priest winning the United States Championship at SummerSlam is one of those instances where we see a talent who is genuinely doing all they can to learn and succeed in the right way. Essentially positioning themselves for the best possible route to success. No shortcuts. No back-stabbing. Just pure hard work, dedication, humble attention to detail, and of course passion for the craft.
Damian Priest is a talent who actively aims to be better than they were at any given time. This takes ingenuity, guts, tenacity, mental toughness, and a lot of long hours of tape study. The goal being to be better. To achieve better. To do better. To represent better. BETTER! Be it the year before. The month before. The match before. Or even the segment before. Taking nothing for granted. The sentiment and authenticity of Damian Priest is shown in not only his words on WWE After The Bell, but also reflected in his actions as a WWE Superstar. I’m elated to see his journey from our ROH days to him becoming your new WWE United States Champion!
