Edge Has A Never Say Never Attitude Regarding A One-On-One Match Against John Cena At WrestleMania
Edge and John Cena elevated one another during a pivotal point in both of their careers but they never had a singles match at WrestleMania, Edge is not opposed to rectifying this.
From 2006 to 2009, John Cena and Edge were bitter rivals The rivalry involved everything from. Edge slapping John Cena’s father across the face in a segment that had to be edited heavily because Vince McMahon thought it was the worst thing he’d ever seen to John Cena exposing Vickie Guerrero, Edge’s wife on-screen at the time, having an affair with The Big Show.
The latter scenario was part of the build-up to WrestleMania 25 and a World Heavyweight Championship Triple Threat Match between John Cena, Edge, and The Big Show. Despite having feuded for many years and competing in multiple match types, John Cena and Edge never did settle their rivalry in a singles match at WrestleMania.
Speaking on The Kurt Angle Show, Edge spoke about his rivalry with John Cena, how they were able to turn what was supposed to be a three-week program into something that lasted three years because of their work ethic, and his desire to actually work a WrestleMania match against John.
“When I got to John, and we kind of got on the same page and he realized what I was out to do, which was just that, to make him Superman. Once we both had that understanding. Then, we were off and running, because I don’t think that program was supposed to last more than three weeks. After WrestleMania 22, [where] I got to work Mick [Foley], who is another guy that just did so much for my career.
“Then they’d circle back to John and I, because I think it worked so good in that three weeks and ratings went up, and all those things, you know, the website hits and everything went through the roof. So it was like, go back to that. Then once they went back to us, I think we ran for like a year and a half after that. Then they rebooted again, and they rebooted again, and we’d ended up on SmackDown and be rebooted. It kept going and going. The only thing was with John and I, we never wrestled a one-on-one at WrestleMania. Which is crazy, right? We worked everything else, but.”
Edge would conclude by saying now that he’s back and John Cena is going to be working again, the possibility is there once again for that rivalry to be renewed.
“I’m back. The scent is in the air. You never know, it could happen one day.”
Speaking about his time with John in the ring, Edge likened John Cena to the lead singer of Pearl Jam, Eddie Vedder.
“John’s very much a performer that likes to feel a crowd. I kind of liken him to — and this is a strange example but, I liken him to Eddie Vedder in that Eddie Vedder will drop a setlist for Pearl Jam, a different one every night, and change it on the fly because he’s feeling the audience and that’s what John and I would do. Because you just, you don’t know, from night to night, what an audience is going to do. So to be able to think on your toes and be able to go with your gut out there, that’s what John and I did, and that was fun.”
