Darby Allin Would Rather Have His Matches Resemble ‘Good Will Hunting’ Than ‘The Expendables’

Darby Allin does not want to be an action hero; he wants his matches to leave you feeling something.

On the surface, Darby Allin appears to be a professional wrestler whose move set is largely built around highspot, car-crash offense, but there is more to Darby than meets the eye.

During a recent appearance on the Wrestling Perspective podcast, Darby was asked where he draws his inspiration from for his matches to which he explained that he looks at his matches as though they are films and he would rather be part of an emotional story like ‘Good Will Hunting’ as opposed to a barrage of explosions like the ones seen in ‘The Expendables,’ which he believes leave audiences feeling impressed for a short period of time, but will ultimately ring hollow.

“Well, you know, when I first started, I would always use like this analogy for films and stuff like that,” Darby began. “You can either have a movie that’s like, for example, I don’t know if you remember that movie ‘The Expendables,’ where it’s just crazy, like crash, explosion, explosion, explosion, Because, by the time you leave the theater, you’re all like, ‘Well, that was cool,’ but it doesn’t like hit you hard a month later, where you really stop [and it] hits you deep in the heart. As opposed to like a random movie, like ‘Good Will Hunting’ or something like that. Something that is a really good story where, oh, man, it leaves you thinking about it after you get out of the theater, as opposed to being like, ‘Oh, that’s cool.’ Yeah, move on.”

He continued, “So that’s how I wanted to view my wrestling because I remember being on the independence when the like, first match would be like, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. Then I would be like, ‘I just want to like sell and try to tell a story.’ You know, it felt like it was really working. Just to separate me, early on away from getting kind of in the shuffle of everybody. So I don’t know, man, I just use those analogies.”

Elsewhere on the same podcast, Allin spoke about why he would prefer a short career where he gave his all as opposed to holding back any passion. Learn more here.
