Hikaru Shida Hits One Year As AEW Women’s World Champion

Hikaru Shida has been on top of the mountain for one year.

On Saturday, May 23, 2020, Hikaru Shida captured the AEW Women’s Championship from Nyla Rose at Double Or Nothing. That event, which Tony Khan called “better than WrestleMania”, kicked off a year of Hikaru Shida reigning Supreme over the entire AEW women’s division.

This year also represented a year of growth for the division. Title defenses and mitches with Ryo Mizunami, Big Swole, Penelope Ford, Tay Conti, Thunder Rosa, and Anna Jay all took place while the division was undergoing growth and many of its performers were honing their skills and becoming seasoned professionals.

Up next for Shida, she will defend the championship against red Baker at this year’s double Or Nothing event. Before that, however, AEW has promised a celebration of her year as champion on the upcoming episode of AEW Dynamite which will take place on Friday, May 28, 2021, beginning at 10 p.m. eastern time.

Fightful will have live coverage of AEW Dynamite and have on-location coverage of Double Or Nothing.
