Kenny Omega Thought He Would Retire In Japan

Kenny Omega made his home in Japan for the majority of his career, becoming the top gaijin in NJPW beginning in 2016.

During his time in NJPW, Omega captured the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship, IWGP United States Championship, IWGP Intercontinental Championship, and IWGP Heavyweight Championship. Omega thought he was going to be in Japan for life until AEW came to fruition.

“If you would have asked me how I would see myself years from now, I never would have said, ‘I’m going to be a full-time wrestler in America.’ I thought for sure I was going to retire in Japan and I was heavily leaning towards just living in Japan for the rest of my days. Of course, I’d maybe do the odd thing in America because we were trying to do a crossover anyway. It’s really surprising and goes to show that you can’t plan for these things. You can’t plan for this phenomenon that is AEW or the pandemic, but we’re rolling with the punches and I’m rolling with all these belt reigns,” said Omega in an interview on Wrestling with the Week.

Omega has found just as much success in North America as he had in Japan, currently holding three titles in three different companies.

Elsewhere during the interview, Omega discussed the responsibilities of being a champion in multiple companies. You can find his full comments by clicking here.
