Anthony Ogogo: My Eye Is A Ticking Time Bomb, I Want To Be Successful As Quickly As Possible
Anthony Ogogo has burst onto the scene in AEW, winning his debut match on the April 14 episode of AEW Dynamite with one punch.
Before Ogogo transitioned into wrestling, he was an Olympic-level boxer with an 11-1 record, but was forced to retire in 2019 due to an eye injury.
Speaking on Sport and Life, Ogogo discussed his eye injury and how it relates to his wrestling career.
“I’m essentially blind in my left eye. I haven’t got great vision from the left side, which is why I can’t box anymore, unfortunately. I’m 78% blind in my left eye. It’s rubbish. There are a lot of things I can’t do in wrestling now, but what am I going to do, sulk the rest of my life? I refuse to do that. I’m not letting this injury take away a chance to be happy and successful. I’m probably one big shot from my left eye being totally blind. Hopefully, it doesn’t come,” he said.
When asked if other wrestlers are told to not attack his left eye, Ogogo said, “No, it’s up to me not to get hit in the eye. I’ll be protecting it like my life depends on it.”
Along with scoring victories with one punch, Ogogo has sunk his fists into Cody Rhodes. On the May 5 episode of AEW Dynamite, Ogogo caught Rhodes with a liver shot in a post-match segment.
Speaking of his AEW run thus far, Ogogo said, “I guess I’m doing well. I’m in the deep end now and big things are happening with me. I’m not Tony Khan, but I’ve obviously impressed certain people with what I’ve been able to do. I’m on the cusp of big things. I beat up Cody Rhodes. Him and Chris Jericho are the two biggest stars in AEW and I’ve beaten up Cody three times now. Left him in a heap in the middle of the ring. My eye is a ticking timebomb, I’m very aware of that. One big shot to my eye and my career is done. It could happen next week. I want to be successful as quickly as possible because I don’t know how long my career is going to last.”
Ogogo is currently aligned with QT Marshall and The Factory on AEW television.
