Mick Foley Says ‘Winter’ By Tori Amos Entranced Him Before Match With Edge At WrestleMania 22
Mick Foley was searching for redemption at WrestleMania 22.
The newest episode of WWE Untold chronicles Edge and Foley’s Hardcore Match at WrestleMania 22. Leading up to the event, Foley was looking for a way to make up for, what he deemed, a less than ideal performance at WrestleMania 20. At that show, he teamed up with The Rock to face Evolution in a Handicap Match. At the time, Foley hadn’t wrestled in four years. Furthermore, despite everything he had accomplished throughout his career, he had yet to have that elusive WrestleMania moment.
As for Edge, he wanted to prove that he could be a main event star. Losing the WWE Championship to John Cena upset him and he needed to change the perception of him as a “pretty boy,” something Mick never understood when you look back at all the Ladder Matches he has had.
Foley asked if he could share his pre-match ritual, which included an admittedly strange interaction with Edge and Lita. He said the following:
“While I’m thinking of it, could I tell you about the pre-match ritual? So I had this particular song I would listen to by Tori Amos, a song called ‘Winter.’ There’s a line that says, ‘When are you going to love you as much as I do?’ There’s something about that line that makes me feel like I’m capable of being stronger and tougher and braver than I could ever be without it. It was really a magical effect on me. I listened to this song like five or six times in a row to the point where I was almost in a trance. A very famous wrestler just looked at me and said, ‘Remind me not to F with you because it takes a dangerous man to listen and get inspired by ‘Winter’ from Tori Amos.’ I felt like I was in another world. It was almost on a cloud. I remember walking up to Edge and Lita and it was the strangest thing that’s ever come out of my mouth, I looked at them, I said, ‘I think we should say a prayer for our safety out there tonight.’ We all held hands. We closed our eyes. Then we went out there and did things that would have gotten us arrested in most parts of the world.”
Edge would go on to win the match after spearing the Hardcore Legend through a table that Lita had lit on fire.
Fifteen years later, Edge is looking to pick up another win at WrestleMania when he takes on Daniel Bryan and Roman Reigns for the WWE Universal Championship next Sunday. Fightful will have live coverage of WrestleMania 37 on both Saturday, April 10 and Sunday, April 11, 2021.
