Edge Reflects On His Favorite Spear And The One He Wants Back

The spear has been used by many wrestlers throughout history with Goldberg putting his stamp on the move and Roman Reigns adopting it as his own in more modern times.

Edge has been dishing out spears to the competition for over a decade now and has arguably the most famous spear spot in wrestling history when he launched himself into Jeff Hardy, who was dangling from the wire above the ring that held the WWE Tag Team Titles, at WrestleMania 17.

“It’s the only one I’ve seen that took place 15-20 feet in the air and the margin for error was so razor-thin and the fact that we pulled it off and were able to walk away from it, it’s got to be the one. There’s a reason it’s played so consistently. The utter trust that Jeff placed in me to be able to pull that off and keep him as safe as possible. For him to take that without batting an eye — he outdid me with the most played moment of my career,” reflected Edge when speaking to Ryan Satin on Out of Character.

Of course, in doing so many spears and some being riskier than others, sometimes things can go wrong.

When asked about the spear that he would like to have back, Edge replied, “There was one I hit on Kurt Angle in a cage match off the top rope. I landed on my elbow and tore my labrum. That was my first injury and that was the snowball effect. Once I got that injury and I didn’t get it fixed, that led to tearing a pec and not getting it fixed. Then a fused wrist. It all goes back to that one spear and the start of needing surgery at some point.”

Edge worked a series of cage matches with Kurt Angle at live events in May 2002 before they faced in a cage match on the May 30, 2002 episode of WWE SmackDown.

Edge is set to challenge for the WWE Universal Title in a triple threat match against Roman Reigns and Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania 37.

Fightful will have live coverage of WWE SmackDown beginning at 8 p.m. ET on Friday.
