Excalibur Discusses The Origins Of PWG
Since it’s inception in 2003, Pro Wrestling Guerrilla has become a breeding ground for some of the top stars in wrestling.
Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, Kenny Omega, Adam Cole, AJ Styles, Daniel Bryan, and countless others found success in PWG before they went on to become major stars in one of the top companies in the world.
PWG was founded by Excalibur, Super Dragon, Disco Machine, Scott Lost, Joey Ryan, and Top Gun Talwar with Excalibur and Super Dragon being the owners.
Speaking to Robbie Fox on My Mom’s Basement, Excalibur reflected back on the origins of PWG.
“We had some bad experiences on the Indies with promoters taking advantage of people. There was one show where it was a 9/11 benefit show and the promoter left at intermission with the entire donation. Everyone was working the show for free, the fans had already paid for it and when we realized he was gone, we just agreed to do the second half of the show. It was experiences like that where we were like, ‘why break our back for someone else when we can do something our way and put on shows we would like to see?’ That was the impetuous for PWG, co-founded with five other guys. Each person had a different vision of what pro wrestling could and should be. Over time, the number narrowed down to just [Super Dragon] and myself,” he said.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, PWG has been unable to run since December 2019. It is unknown when they will return to live action.
Excalibur currently serves as an announcer for All Elite Wrestling.
