Following Kota Ibushi’s victory over Tetsuya Naito at Castle Attack, El Desperado confronted the IWGP Heavyweight and Intercontinental Champion, challenging him to a match at the upcoming NJPW Anniversary show on Thursday, March 4, 2021. With this challenge, Desperado is hoping to put a spin on a traditional challenge.
During the NJPW Anniversary show, it is a tradition that the IWGP Heavyweight Champion faces the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion in a non-title contest. This year, Desperado is looking to leverage that tradition in order to get himself some more gold.
During his challenge to Kota, Desperado proclaimed that he wanted to challenge Ibushi for both of his championships. While Ibushi did accept his offer, it was made clear by Kevin Kelly on commentary that the championship ramifications of this challenge were not official, and more will be found out in a press conference later in the week.
