Report: UFC Eyeing Dustin Poirier vs. Conor McGregor 3, Possibly In May
UFC lightweight contenders Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor might not have to wait long for their trilogy matchup to come to a realization.
ESPN’s Ariel Helwani and former UFC two-division champion Daniel Cormier were breaking down the current landscape of the UFC’s lightweight division on their weekly show DC & Helwani, when Helwani revealed that he’s heard that the promotion is leaning towards doing a trilogy bout next between Poirier and McGregor.
“So now it looks, two weeks later, we’re going back in the direction of DP versus Conor three,” Helwani said to Cormier, who seemed surprised by the news. “Ya that’s the direction we’re going, now the big question is, this is the big question, belt or not? that seems to be up in the air still.”
He also revealed later in the discussion that a target date for the bout could be May saying the Irishman wants to “come back in May.”
Cormier himself was a fan of the idea of the fight but brought up some good reasoning of why the 155-pound title now being on the line could be problematic.
“I like the fight, I think it’s the fight to make, it’s the third fight,” Cormier said. “I think where you run into some issues is again, I think a couple weeks ago I said I would prefer them fighting for a world championship. I think you make Dustin make a choice in terms of weighing what’s valuable to him. You want the belt fight or you want the championship?”
The pair who is now tied 1-1 after Poirier’s second-round knockout victory at UFC 257, clearly seemed interested in a potential third fight after the matchup. It also makes sense why the promotion would want to cash in on a trilogy between the two, as their rematch back on January 23 did a reported 1.6 million PPV buys making it one of the top three events in UFC history in terms of PPV buy rate.
“We will do it again.”
