News of a WWE special event coming to India first came to light on the WWE Q3 investor call. new WWE president, Nick Khan revealed that the company was working on bringing a special event to India in 2021 in partnership with Sony, their television partner in the region.
“We are excited to now be working with our content partner in India, Sony, on a 2021 event that will primarily feature our developing Indian Superstars. That event will air in India on the Sony platforms and will also be distributed domestically in the United States.”
Later, further news broke concerning the development of an NXT India brand.
Currently, it is said that the plan is to launch the brand with an inaugural taping of a one-night tournament in Florida on Friday, January 22, and that special is set to air on Tuesday, January 26, the day that India celebrates Republic Day.
Overall, the plan for the Indian brand is similar to that of NXT UK where, once travel restrictions allow, WWE will be hosting full-time events in India and even develop an Indian WWE Performance Center, hopefully by the year 2022.
Reportedly, the initial event will feature talents such as former WWE champion Jinder Mahal, The Singh Brothers, Indus Sher, Jeet Rama, and one or more of the three recruits signed by the company after the tryouts in Mumbai. Namely, those recruits could be Gurvinder Singh, Sukhwinder Grewal, or Laxmi Kant Rajpoot.
The latest report also said that Jeff Jarrett, who helped bring Ring Ka King to India a decade ago, is heavily involved with this project. Learn more at this link.
We will continue to monitor the story and report any and all updates.
