Kenny Omega: It Is My Responsibility To Make Sure Those Competing Against Me Get Bigger Salaries
Kenny Omega believes it is his responsibility to make sure everybody in the wrestling business makes more money, even those competing directly against him.
Since capturing the AEW World Championship at Winter is Coming on December 2, Kenny Omega and Don Callis have adopted a megalomaniacal mindset where they feel that everything they’re doing is ultimately for the greater good of the industry.
Speaking on Chris Jericho’s Talk is Jericho podcast, Kenny Omega revealed, when discussing Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson’s decision to re-sign with WWE for more money, that he is not concerned with the motives of others. He knows that he has the freedom and the ability to change the industry and make sure that everybody gets more money. He says that is simply a part of the responsibility he feels and if others want to, they can thank him, saying the only thing they will have to deal with is “not liking the person looking back at them in the mirror.”
“When The Good Brothers were coming up [upon their contract being up,] we were the first people to light them up, give them a call to say that, ‘yes, you have a home here if you want it.’ They ended up going back for more money and there’s no shame in that,” Kenny began. “I don’t know what motivates people to do what we do in the ring, what we do in the business. If you’re a family man, your priorities change. I don’t have anything to hold me back from doing what I know must be done. This is a responsibility, what I’m doing right now. I feel that I have the ability and thus I am responsible to change the business, to give people more jobs, to give the people that are competing directly against me, to give them double, triple, quadruple their salary. That’s part of my responsibility and they can thank me all they want for it [or] they can hate me all they want for it. But when they put their food on the table, when they send their kids to college, that’s because of me. The only part that they have to deal with is a part that they don’t like. The person looking back at them in the mirror, because they can’t be me.”
He concluded, “Because all of the accolades that I collect on a yearly basis, and there’s multiples. The needle that moves, breaks the scale, every time that I do anything. Any time that I open my mouth, any time that I type something on a keyboard, any time that do anything in a ring that breaks the internet, I know it upsets people. But, I can’t change who I am. I can’t change my DNA, I can’t change the purpose. I can’t change my life’s goal.”
Kenny would later expand on the relationship between himself and Bullet Club, saying that if it wasn’t for Gallows and Anderson, he would still be toiling away trying to win the big one in New Japan Pro-Wrestling, just like Kota Ibushi. Read his further comments at this link.
