Cody Rhodes Believes AEW Is Too Generous With How Many Wrestlers They Put On Posters
Cody Rhodes explains why he feels that a spot on AEW’s promotional material is sacred real estate that should be earned by all wrestlers on the roster.
Oftentimes, AEW’s promotional posters will look like the album cover for Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club, with many of the stars on the roster plastered all over the poster. For Cody Rhodes, he feels that placement on promotional materials should be a spot that is earned by those on the roster and they should all work harder to on the poster and then a prominent place on the poster and if they don’t make the cut, that’s okay because not everyone can be pushed at the same time.
On the latest episode of the AEW Unrestricted podcast, Cody Rhodes explains this philosophy when discussing why he’s okay if he is not on the cover of the upcoming AEW video game.
“I’m not going to bury somebody [to get on the video game cover]. I’d rather do it by my own merit. In the end, I know we’re just going to put everyone on the cover anyway because we’re way too generous when it comes to poster space.
“If I go to see a Denzel Washington movie and Denzel Washington’s on the poster, I get it. I know we try to cover a lot of bases and Brandi loves everyone to be on the poster too. But like, I just need like four or five people because then you’re supposed to — the goal is like, ‘I want to be on that next.’ Then you look at it later in your career like, ‘that was mine.’”
Cody would relate this to the WWE posters saying that they are also too generous and that oftentimes they spotlight workers who aren’t even working the shows they are on the poster of.
“It’s not negative. If you’re trying to present, ‘Hey, Ricky Starks is our guy. He’s the future.’ Well, then don’t make him the same size of… Who I was going to say was mean. He’s got to be front and center. He has to be presented as such. That is wrestling, traditional wrestling, you lead. That’s one of the problems that WWE has. It’s still John Cena and the Undertaker. They’re not wrestling.”
Speaking of the visual presentation of AEW, All Elite Wrestling presented an overhauled aesthetic on the first episode of AEW Dynamite following Full Gear and a new “We Are Boundless” tagline. You can check out the full results of that episode at this link.
