Awesome Kong Releases Statement On GLOW’s Racial Stereotypes
Awesome Kong (real name Kia Stevens) has spoken out against GLOW and its producers.
In the series Kong plays Tammé “The Welfare Queen” Dawson and she took to social media to address the producers and writers of GLOW for portraying racial stereotypes. Kong says she and her fellow actresses Sydelle Noel, Britney Young, Sunita Mani, Ellen Wong, Shakira Barrera felt disempowered throughout their time on GLOW and that it has been problematic to use their faces solely in the context of racist storylines.
Kong and her castmates implore GLOW to hire an executive producer or consulting producer of color, address how portraying stereotypical and racially offensive wrestling personas has impacted the character’s personal lives and dignity, and amplify their voices and importance within the season narrative.

GLOW was recently canceled by Netflix after three seasons, though efforts are underway to revive the series on a different platform.
