Invicta FC 21 Main Event Changed To Title Fight
Next weekend’s Invicta Fighting Championships 21 main event, a featherweight division bout between Megan Anderson and Charmaine Tweet, will now be for the vacant Invicta FC Interim Featherweight Title.
Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino, the current Invicta FC Featherweight Champion, may be out of action for a year after she was notified by USADA about a potential out of competition drug test failure, which means the title wouldn't be defended for over two years by the time she was eligible to return.
“I think this is a great move in the right direction for the Invicta featherweight division,” Anderson said to MMA Junkie. “It’s an exciting time for the 145-pound athletes and I’m looking forward to bringing my belt back to my team, my family and taking another step forward in my career.”
Tweet, who has previously challenged Cyborg for the featherweight title, also commented on the added wrinkle to her fight.
“I’m so excited that this has become an interim title fight,” Tweet stated. “It gives us an even larger platform to showcase the amazing talent in the featherweight division – not that I needed the added incentive of a title to bring the heat in this fight. It was always going to be a barn burner.”
Invicta Fighting Championships 21 takes place on Saturday, January 14 from the Scottish Rite Temple in Kansas City, Missouri with Megan Anderson and Charmaine Tweet headlining.
