Cody Garbrandt’s Coach Wants Big Rematch For New Champ

Cody Garbrandt is the brand new UFC bantamweight Champion, he won the title after defeating Dominick Cruz by unanimous decision at UFC 207.

Garbrandt’s coach at Team Alpha Male, Justin Buchholz, would like to see the new champion face the former champion in a rematch for his first title defense, but he would settle with Garbrandt fighting another familiar name.

“I watched T.J.’s fight a couple of times,” Buchholz told MMA Junkie Radio. “And it’s kind of up to Cody. He’s the champion. He just dominated the guy who has a win over T.J. in his last outing, has a win over Urijah (Faber, now retired), who’s been on top for the last 10 years. And I would like to see Cruz back in there. But the T.J. fight, everyone’s saying that he deserves the shot, and that’s fine with me too. Because I can tell you what would happen in that fight, but I’m not ready to tell you yet.”

No matter what the future holds for the new bantamweight champion, Buchholz is truly happy with Garbrandt’s performance at UFC 207.

“I was just really impressed with everything that Cody did,” Buchholz said. “He’s like a sponge when it comes to learning new techniques. And specific things we worked in camp came out in the fight, and that just makes me so happy to see that. You can give the guy his weapons. but it’s up to them to use them, and he believed in me, believed in the system, and a lot of that stuff was very effective.”

Garbrandt’s next fight has yet to be announced, but he recently called out UFC Lightweight Champion Conor McGregor and UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo.
