Daniel Bryan Was Rubbed The Wrong Way When WWE Title Matches With CM Punk Didn’t Main Event

At Over The Limit 2012, CM Punk entered the arena as WWE Champion and stood across the ring from Daniel Bryan. A WWE Championship match between Punk and Bryan would sound like a headliner on any card, but it wasn’t on that night.

Instead, John Cena headlined in a cage match against John Laurinaitis.

That didn’t sit well with Daniel Bryan.

“Punk and I are doing stuff with the WWE Championship against each other, and we’re not in the main event. That, I don’t get rubbed the wrong way very often, but it was one of those things where we did a title match once and the main event was John Cena against my now father-in-law [John Laurinaitis]. It was this weird thing. We did three pay-per-view title matches, two singles, where none of them were the main event. I remember being in these title matches and being like, ‘Hey, let’s go out there and show them,'” Bryan said on WWE Backstage.

As mentioned by Bryan, he and CM Punk would go on to battle for the WWE Title at the next two pay-per-view events, but John Cena was the man who closed the show each night. Bryan said that Kane being inserted into the feud created a different dynamic and one he came to enjoy after getting to know him.

Bryan is set to face AJ Styles for the vacant Intercontinental Title on Friday’s WWE SmackDown.
