Becky Lynch: WrestleMania 36 Wasn’t The Same Without Fans, But Not As Weird As I Would Have Thought
WrestleMania 36 was held under unique circumstances due to the ongoing situation with COVID-19 and Becky Lynch certainly felt a different atmosphere compared to last year’s WrestleMania.
Lynch, like most who were part of WrestleMania 36, had her match against Shayna Baszler for the Raw Women’s Championship held at the WWE Performance Center in front of no fans. In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Lynch admitted that competing at WrestleMania 36 didn’t feel the same as past shows that she wrestled in because of the absence of a live crowd.
“It’s not the same without the fans there. But it’s not as weird as I would have thought, and that’s because we have a job to do–go out there and have the best fight possible. That’s the job, so I focused on putting on the best performance I possibly can and tell the best story to make people care, like I always do,” Lynch said.
Another change for this year’s WrestleMania was the fact that none of the matches were done live and instead were pre-taped. Lynch got to watch her match against Baszler like everyone else when it aired on April 5 and admitted that it was a different experience getting to watch her WrestleMania match at the same time as everyone else.
“That gave a different perspective. It was cool to be a performer and a fan at the same time. That was a reminder that we’re all in this together. And I think people needed this. I was so proud watching last night. I thought there were some great matches, and to cap it off with the ‘Boneyard’ match, it was amazing. That was wrestling reimagined. It’s not what we’re used to, but it was fantastic. In this time, we need to get more creative,” Lynch said.
Lynch ended up beating Baszler to retain the Raw Women’s Championship and recently passed 365 days as the champion after winning the title back in the main event of WrestleMania 35 in 2019. You can check out Fightful’s post-show podcast reviewing both nights of WrestleMania 36 at this link.
