Young Bucks Reveal The Origin Of Their Tag Team Name

No matter their age, Matt & Nick Jackson will always be The Young Bucks. The brothers, who began teaming regularly early in their careers, have always been tied at the hip. But they began as singles wrestlers and only started teaming after getting booked together for a Lucha show in California.

Speaking on AEW Unrestricted, Matt & Nick explained the origin behind the Young Bucks name.

“We didn’t have any control over it. There was a local show running the Grand Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles. The promoter contacted us and saw us wrestle at a local lucha show and was interested in booking us. They were like, ‘We’re going to team you up.’ We just knew this arena was famous and we had to do it because it was going to be our first big break,” said Nick.

Matt said they were offering $100, which led Nick to continue by saying, “As soon as we heard they were offering us $100, we were blown away. We were like, ‘Oh my God, this is our job now.’ Before then, we were doing shows for $5 or wrestle for masks. We did hot dogs, but it wasn’t hot dogs, it was a certificate for a hot dog. Eventually, we got to the building and we’re looking at the list for who is booked and we’re not seeing our names. We went to the promoter and were like, ‘Our names aren’t on the list’ and he goes, ‘They are. We have you named as The Young Bucks.’ We were like, ‘No.'”

Matt continued, “He goes, ‘I have to be honest. I didn’t know your names. When we were going over the card we were like, hey, didn’t we book those two young bucks? Yeah yeah, throw em on there, let’s call Matt & Nick; The Young Bucks.’ He’s like, ‘How do you like it?’ ‘That’s great!’ In the back we’re like, ‘No! You’re ruining everything!'”

The brothers went on to say that they used the song “We’re Not Going To Take It” by Twisted Sister and were subject to homophobic chants as they were the only white wrestlers on the show. However, the match went well and they ended up winning the crowd over.
