Eric Bischoff Comments On Sasha Banks Winning Title On Raw
Sasha Banks defeated Charlotte this past Monday Night on Raw in a Falls Count Anywhere Main Event to reclaim the Women's Title, becoming a 3-Time Champ. She has beaten Charlotte for the Championship three times, and all three wins have happened on Raw. Each time she has defended the Championship against Charlotte at a PPV event, she has lost. This has led some to complain about the booking of her championship reigns and has led to a little bit of controversy. But Eric Bischoff, speaking on his podcast, thinks it's all being looked at in the wrong way.
"I think the only thing controversial about it is the non-controversy associated with it. To me it’s simple business, especially now," said Bischoff. "Twenty years ago when I was doing it the television industry was quite different from what it is today. With the plethora of programming and the availability of streaming and all of the forms of entertainment that are out there I think it’s even more imperative that the WWE puts their best product that they can on television to drive PPVs. I don’t even know how many PPVs the WWE has now every year. The old formula of spending four, six or more weeks building up to a big PPV event and then paying it off on PPV … that model is out the window."
Currently, there are two PPV events during most months, one for Raw and one for Smackdown, and there are the "Big Four" events–Royal Rumble, Wrestlemania, Summerslam and Survivor Series–in which both brands are represented. There is some talk about the PPV schedule changing for 2017.
"Now you have to capture everyone’s imagination so quickly and you have to keep their imagination," Bischoff said. "In order to do that everything is much more fast paced. Number one, I don’t think it’s controversial. Number two, remember, television drives everything. What they’re doing, I think they’ve done a great job with the women’s division, is make it feel important by doing as much as the possibly can to the widest audience they can possibly have."
There has been no rematch set for Sasha Banks and Charlotte. The next Raw brand PPV is Roadblock: End of the Line on December 18 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
