Paige: Women Still Have A Long Way To Go In A Male Dominated Industry
Women in WWE have made plenty of history over the last few years. From main eventing pay-per-view events to having an all-women’s pay-per-view to main eventing WrestleMania, females in WWE have never been spotlighted stronger.
But there is still room to grow according to Paige. Recently, Becky Lynch commented that women are judged harsher because if they main event a show and don’t deliver, fans are more critical than if their male counterparts were to have the same disappointing match. The criticism came following the Survivor Series 2019 main event pitting Lynch against Shayna Baszler and Bayley.
When asked by Gary Cassidy of Sportskeeda about the match and criticism, Paige replied, “It wasn’t even a bad match. But that’s just how the world works. We still have a long way to go, being women in a male-dominated industry. We got the opportunity to have an all-female main event and people weren’t happy with it. [Becky] is absolutely right. And she’ll continue to be right. There has to be change. Kind of like jokes on the internet. There has to be change. You can’t make jokes about women like that anymore.”
Paige’s last sentence on making jokes about women could be a reference to Triple H, who joked that “Paige probably has kids she doesn’t know about.” Triple H later apologized for the joke and reached out to Paige.
Charlotte Flair also agreed with the sentiment that women are held to a different standard, saying that expectations are higher because women’s main events don’t happen as often. You can view her full comments by clicking here.
