Becky Lynch: The Pool Is Quite Shallow On Raw And SmackDown At The Moment
As the current Raw Women’s Champion, Becky Lynch has welcomed all challengers for her title. Since winning the belt at WrestleMania 35, she has defended the Raw Women’s Title against Lacey Evans, Natalya, and Sasha Banks.
In recent months, Lynch has been feuding with Asuka, who is one half of the Women’s Tag Team Champions. The feud has been one of the hottest rivalries leading into WWE Royal Rumble, but has also highlighted the lack of depth on Raw as others on the women’s roster have not had much television time for female-specific feuds.
“The pool is quite shallow on both Raw and SmackDown at the moment,” said Lynch on WWE Backstage. “Actively, there’s myself, Charlotte, Kabuki Warriors, Sarah Logan, and Nattie. And now we’ve got the addition of Liv and Lana. But we haven’t highlighted them in awhile. So, when we saw all these different women [ahead of WWE Survivor Series] who were established in their own departments and their own shows and they were all fighting against each other, there was that excitement that we wanted to see. We wanted to see these different matchups and we were getting these different matchups. We don’t always have the luxury of that. It’s going in, ‘Okay, I’ve already wrestled this person. How can I tell a new story? How can I give the audience something to care about that they haven’t seen before?'”
Lynch continued, “You have to obsess about it and you have to think ‘how can I make this different?’ Especially now. There’s so much wrestling content on TV. How do I stand out with all the noise and everything going on?”
Elsewhere on the show, Lynch discussed the idea of dropping the “women’s” part of the “women’s division.” She later clarified her comments to say they weren’t about renaming the division, but were more about rethinking the division. You can find her full comments by clicking here.
