Sonya Deville: There’s Room For Plenty Of LGBTQ Storylines

During the Lana-Bobby Lashley wedding on the Dec. 30 episode of WWE Raw, Liv Morgan returned and revealed herself to be Lana’s lover. The controversial storyline brought a wide range of emotions from fans with some chalking it up to sports entertainment, and others worried how WWE would pull off an LGBTQ storyline.

Sonya Deville, an openly gay superstar, pitched WWE on an LGBTQ storyline with her and Mandy Rose in the past, but the idea never came to fruition. When Liv was revealed as Lana’s lover, Sonya tweeted a simple, “Welp… my mind is blown.”

Speaking to Bleacher Report, Sonya elaborated a bit on her thoughts.

“I mean, at the end of the day, we work for a sports-entertainment company, and the segment was very entertaining. That’s not to say Mandy and I don’t get our storyline in the future. You know, there’s room for plenty of LGBTQ storylines,” she said.

When asked if she believes the angle could have been handled better or presented differently, Sonya did not offer a comment.

Sonya was also asked about what WWE can do to change the perception and provide a product that is more inclusive. She replied, “I’ve been working hard over the past two-and-a-half years since I’ve been on Raw and SmackDown with executives and GLAAD and organizations in trying to do exactly that. I think it’s very important to have representation of every human there is, right? Just like you would see on a TV show or a movie in Hollywood. That’s something that’s personally important to me and the company as a whole. There’s definitely talks going on about more representation in the years to come. I’ll definitely make it my personal duty and passion to help pursue those.”

The Liv Morgan-Lana storyline is set to continue in some capacity on Raw as Liv teased being in Rusev’s corner for his match against Bobby Lashley. Meanwhile, Sonya remains in a tag team with Mandy Rose on SmackDown.
