Kane Discusses The Disintegration Of Kayfabe Over Time & The Structure Of Pro Wrestling Today
Back in 1997, the Kane character debuted on WWE television and provided a formidable challenge for The Undertaker heading into WrestleMania 14. A lot of their angle, and Kane’s character as a whole over the course of the last two decades, has relied heavily on the preservation of kayfabe and the suspension of disbelief.
Appearing on the WWE After The Bell podcast with Corey Graves, Kane was asked about his feelings on The Undertaker appearing on Broken Skull Sessions with Steve Austin and not being in character.
This led “The Big Red Machine” to discuss the changes to the industry in recent years with the advent of social media. Admittedly, he says he has mixed feelings towards the exposing of the industry, but he also says that he finds the ability to connect with the audience through social media to be beneficial for all involved.
“Well, I think, like everyone, I have mixed feelings about it. I think, overall, it’s good when we look at things like social media,” said the two-time World Champion. “On the one hand, you have the days where everything was very protected and there were certain advantages to that because part of the allure of the WWE business is the fact that we’re out there throwing twists and turns and trying to keep people guessing as to what’s coming back and I think that we’ve taken some of the pleasure and enjoyment out of the business by people getting so enamored with the business side of things. But when you look at our ability to connect with fans now and really to bring people into our world, I think that’s something that’s extremely beneficial for everybody.”
Kane, currently mayor of Knox County, Tennessee, has admitted in recent interviews that he would like his retirement match to be a tag team match alongside the Undertaker as he’s always enjoyed their dynamic together.
