For years Daniel Cormier has teased working with WWE in some capacity. A longtime wrestling fan, Cormier was scheduled for a WWE commentary tryout in 2018 and Fox reportedly wanted Cormier to do commentary for SmackDown when the show moved to the network this past October.
In an interview with BT Sport, Cormier revealed that the two sides were once again close on working together in different capacities, but the timing didn’t work.
“I’ve talked to WWE on a number of occasions. They want to work together,” said Cormier. “I almost came to the press conference for Brock vs. Cain to play the role of ‘fight builder.’ Unfortunately, my schedule didn’t work. I had an offer to work on WWE Backstage on Fox. Obviously, it didn’t work with the new relationship with ESPN. We are constantly trying to find ways to get me involved in the product. As a big-time fan of WWE, nothing makes me happier. I’ve got some great opportunities. I’ve got things outside of the Octagon that are going to carry me for a long time. My son would love (me in WWE). He loves seeing Cain in there.”
Cormier is friends and teammates with Cain Velasquez, who fought Brock Lesnar at WWE Crown Jewel. Cormier was hopeful for a MMA fight against Lesnar in early 2019, but the fight never came together. Cormier does analyst work for ESPN while also providing commentary for UFC events.
The advocate for Lesnar, Paul Heyman took to social media to comment on Cormier using Lesnar’s name in the interview.

It’s easy to garner publicity calling out the top box office attraction. @dc_mma can’t hang w/ @BrockLesnar in the #Brocktagon nor a @WWE ring, and he can’t hang with me on the mic. MAYBE he could TRY to hang with Brock on the mic and me in the ring … MAYBE!!! https://t.co/3eMzMQYzXa— Paul Heyman (@HeymanHustle) December 15, 2019
Despite the mutual interest, nothing has come together between WWE and Cormier. The former UFC Heavyweight Champion is scheduled to rematch Stipe Miocic for the title at some point in 2020. The bout could be Cormier’s final fight of his career.
