November 2 is going to be a busy night for combat sports fans because UFC 244 is going to be going head to head against the Canelo Alvarez/Sergey Kovalev bout.
UFC President Dana White doesn’t seem to concerned about going head to head with such a big boxing event.
“We started talking about this date, and then a week later, I heard they were going to do that fight,” White said at the UFC 244 pre-show press conference (via Matt Erickson of MMA Junkie). “I think they’re crazy to go the same night as us on DAZN, but it is what it is.”
An MMA dream fight of sorts is going to be headlining UFC 244, as Jorge Masvidal faces Nate Diaz for the BMF Championship.
White believes it would be a smart move for the promoters of the boxing event to put Alvarez vs. Kovalev on after Masvidal vs. Diaz ends.
“If they time it right and they do this thing the right way, it could be very much like the other night (at UFC on ESPN+ 16), when (Justin) Gaethje fought (Donald) ‘Cowboy’ (Cerrone), and then the (Tyson) Fury fight was on after. If they time it right, it could work out. But if they want to go head to head, they’re (expletive) nuts,” says White.
UFC 244 takes place on Saturday, November 2 from Madison Square Garden in New York, New York with Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz headlining. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, with a post-show podcast to follow.
