Kell Brook To Fight Errol Spence Jr. Next Year
Welterweight champion Kell Brook has decided to remain at the weight class and is fighting Errol Spence Jr.
Brook and Spence will fight for Brook’s IBF title. That fight does not have an exact date, but according to ESPN’s Dan Rafael, who reported the fight and had spoken with Brook and his promoter Eddie Hearn. Brook had been contemplating moving up to junior middleweight after moving up to middleweight to challenge Gennady Golovkin for various of his world titles. Brook decided to stay put at welterweight.
“I had a meeting with Eddie and told him I am not prepared to give up my title,” Brook said. “I know there are options at 154 pounds and I may even be more suited there but I am not willing to give up what I fought so hard for. I want the unification fights but if they aren’t there then it will be Spence next for me in a big UK show.”
Hearn did say that Brook wanted to remain a welterweight world champion and that Brook wishes to eventually have a title unification fight with WBO champion Manny Pacquiao.
“I spoke through various options with Kell and he was adamant that he would not relinquish his welterweight world title,” Hearn said. “In an ideal world, he would unify the division against Manny Pacquiao but the Spence fight is also one that really excites him and fight fans. That could be a big fight here in the UK and with the 75-25 split in place we would be very confident of bringing that fight to Sheffield.”
Brook had been recovering from injuries suffered from the fight with Golovkin. He suffered a broken eye socket in the September 10 fight with Golovkin.
