Lomachenko Set for Another Showcase Win Over Campbell
On August 31, Vasyl Lomachenko will make the first appearance of his professional career in the UK, with fans in London set to witness a modern-day great close up as he takes on home hope Luke Campbell.
The latter Hull-born fighter will face probably the most difficult task there is modern boxing; trying to beat ‘Hi-Tech’ Lomachenko.
‘Cool-Hand’ Campbell does have one thing in common with the present unified lightweight world champion and that’s a shared gold medal success at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Both men finished top of the podium in their then respective divisions seven years ago, with ‘Loma’ winning gold in his current professional division of lightweight, while Campbell secured a victory at bantamweight.
Notably, that triumph for Lomachenko saw him pick up his second gold medal before he turned over to the paid ranks and he is arguably the greatest ever amateur boxer in history.
The two former gold medal winners are now preparing to do battle as pros in the ring at the city which hosted their past amateur successes, with London’s O2 Arena set as the venue for this anticipated match-up.
In the Lomachenko vs. Campbell odds, it’s the reigning and defending lightweight champion that will enter the ring as the massively odds-on 1/16 favorite to retain his titles with another victory over his British challenger.
These two imminent foes have endured contrasting careers since signing professional contracts in the same year, back in 2013 after their famous Olympic victories.
While Lomachenko has become the fastest ever two-division and three-division world champion in the history of the sport and secured his position as one of the best on the planet, Campbell has had to deal with plenty of setbacks and bounce back several times.
The Yorkshireman is still aiming to become world champion in his career but his next bout will be the Mount Everest of challenges.
He previously came up short against stylish former titleholder Jorge Linares in a close, fascinating tussle on American soil, losing a split decision then. ‘Loma’, meanwhile, was later able to stop Linares in stunning fashion and unify the lightweight division.
This looks set to be yet another showcase performance for the Ukrainian ace as he looks to put his remarkable ring talents on full display for the UK audience to see and on a huge Sky Sports Box Office event in the English capital.
Manchester-born fighter Anthony Crolla, a former lightweight world titleholder, was brutally stopped in four very one-sided rounds last April by Lomachenko at the Staples Center in California.
The widely regarded pound-for-pound number one star in the sport will now seek to add another British victim to his hitlist when he climbs through the ring ropes on August 31.
Campbell will likely put up a stronger challenge than his compatriot Crolla did earlier in the year but the end result looks set to the same for the modern-day great Lomachenko.
