Hulk Hogan Says He Scripted Out His Entire WrestleMania III Match With Andre The Giant

Hulk Hogan details how he got the most out of Andre at WrestleMania III.

WrestleMania III remains one of the biggest WrestleMania’s of all-time with a WWE announced 93,173 fans packing the Pontiac Silverdome. The show was headlined by Hulk Hogan and Andre The Giant, which featured the historical moment of Hogan slamming Andre. By 1987, Andre was having health issues and couldn’t move like he used to, but he still managed to turn in a strong effort against Hogan. As Hogan tells it, he scripted the entire match to make sure he could get the most out of Andre.

“Andre just kept telling me, ‘don’t worry.’ I went out there not knowing what we were doing,” Hogan told Steve Austin on the Steve Austin Show. “The night before the match, [Vince McMahon] came to my room and said, ‘Andre is in a really bad spot with his back. What would you do to get through the match with Andre?’ I took a legal pad out and started writing the match down. I wrote everything down and wanted to keep Andre next to the ropes so he could pull himself up. I gave it to Vince and told him, ‘If you tell Andre I did this, I will be a fucking dead man because he does not like anything like this. He likes to call it in the ring.’ Vince must have went and talked to him because everything I wrote down was exactly the way the match went. I dropped the leg, and I didn’t know if he was gonna kick out or not. And he didn’t kick out.”

While the dream match between Hogan and Andre took place at WrestleMania III and another dream match between Hogan and The Rock took place at WrestleMania X-8, one dream match that never took place was Hogan vs. Steve Austin.
