Yuriorkis Gamboa vs. Roman Martinez Announced For Davis vs. Nunez Card

A pair of lightweight bouts have been added to the July 27 Showtime Championship Boxing card from Baltimore.

Showtime announced that former world champions Yuriorkis Gamboa and Roman Martinez will face each other in a 10-round fight. That bout will serve as part of the undercard to the WBA super featherweight title defense between Gervonta Davis and mandatory challenger Ricardo Nunez

Gamboa once held the unified WBA and IBF featherweight titles several years ago, first winning the WBA title in 2009 and then the IBF belt in 2010. The 37-year-old Gamboa has faced a number of notable fighters over the years, including Jonathan Victor Barros, Orlando Salido, Darleys Perez, Terence Crawford and Robinson Castellanos among others.

Martinez, a three-time WBO super featherweight champion, recently returned to the ring in March when he stopped William Gonzalez in the eighth round of their bout. That was Martinez’s first fight since losing to Vasiliy Lomachenko back in 2016. The 36-year-old Martinez owns wins over the likes of Orlando Salido, Diego Magdaleno and Nicky Cook.

Also announced for the card is another 10-rounder between former WBA super featherweight champion Jezreel Corrales and rising contender Ladarius Miller. Corrales held the WBA title from 2016 to 2017 and lost the belt on the scales one day before a title defense against Alberto Machado. The fight continued as planned and Machado knocked out Corrales in the eighth round to become the new WBA titleholder. But as Machado won the belt, he was quickly relegated to “Regular” titleholder and a “Super” title was created, which was won by Davis after beating Jesus Cuellar in April 2018.

Since the loss to Machado, Corrales spent 18 months away from the ring, returning to action this past April when he knocked out Onalvi Sierra in Panama. Corrales is currently ranked No. 8 by the WBA at 130 pounds.

Miller has won his last 10 fights after suffering his lone pro loss back in 2016. During that win streak, Miller scored a 10-round unanimous decision win over Jamel Herring, who would go on to win the WBO super featherweight title, back in 2017.
