Vacant WBC Cruiserweight Title Now On The Line For Krzysztof Glowacki vs. Mairis Briedis
The upcoming World Boxing Super Series cruiserweight semifinal matchup between Krzysztof Glowacki and Mairis Briedis will now be for two world titles.
The WBC revealed that its vacant world title will now be on the line when Glowacki and Briedis fight on June 15 in Riga, Latvia. The news comes after the WBC decided to move Oleksandr Usyk from champion to “Champion in Recess,” meaning the actual world title is vacant.
Not only is the WBC belt at stake, but also the WBO title after it was previously announced that Glowacki was elevated from interim champion to full world champion. Originally, when the WBO announced that Glowacki would be the organization’s sole world champion at 200 pounds, it also mentioned that the fight against Briedis, ranked No. 2 by the WBO, would count as a voluntary title defense. The WBO has now made a slight alteration to the fight and it will now count as a mandatory title defense for Glowacki.
With the two titles at stake, that would mean the winner of the World Boxing Super Series will be a unified champion at 200 pounds. The only cruiserweight title that is still presently held by Usyk after winning the 2018 edition of the WBSS is the IBF title with no announcement as to whether or not Usyk will vacate the belt in time for the semifinals.
The fight will be streamed on DAZN in the United States as is the other semifinal matchup taking place on the same card: Yunier Dorticos vs. Andrew Tabiti.
