Report: Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Slated To Return On Pacquiao-Thurman Undercard

It’s been more than two years since Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has competed inside the ring, but after multiple unsuccessful comeback attempts, it appears that Chavez is reportedly set to return this summer.

According to reports, Chavez, the son of the legendary Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., is getting ready to compete on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao vs. Keith Thurman card taking place on July 20. No opponent has been named, but that should be announced in the coming weeks according to the ESPN Deportes report.

Chavez last fought in May 2017 when he fought Canelo Alvarez at a 164-pound catchweight. Since then, Chavez has been inactive from the sport with the last two years being filled with rumors on when he would come back. This is not the first time Chavez has attempted to come back after his loss to Alvarez. Chavez was originally supposed to fight Alfredo Angulo last December but the fight was canceled after Chavez reportedly missed a commission-ordered medical appointment and PBC announced that he and his team didn’t feel he was ready for the fight.

At one point, Chavez was one of the sport’s bright stars having held the WBC middleweight title from 2011 to 2012. During his title reign, Chavez successfully defended his belt three times before losing to Sergio Martinez in 2012. Since the loss to Martinez, Chavez never returned to being a world title contender and has won four of his last six fights.

The pay-per-view portion of the card will be headlined by Pacquiao vs. Thurman for the WBA welterweight title. The only other fight announced is an IBF super middleweight title bout between Caleb Plant and unbeaten light heavyweight contender Mike Lee who is moving down in weight for the fight. The Plant vs. Lee fight will be televised on Fox and lead into the pay-per-view.
