Marcos Maidana Reveals Reason He Stopped Comeback
Marcos Maidana explains why his latest comeback attempt has ended without a return fight.
Months ago, it was reported that Maidana, a former world champion who retired several years ago, would be ending his retirement to fight for PBC. Maidana’s comeback ended after issues between both sides arose.
In an interview with Diario Popular, Maidana explained that there were some financial issues in regards to his training expenses being covered. Maidana was given some financial help, but has also taken money out of his own pocket to pay for his training camp team. While those expenses were not exactly in the contract he signed, Maidana felt that other people were not keeping their word on covering those training expenses.
“In the contract, no, but it was a verbal agreement. They said they were going to take care of that, training expenses, vitamins, etc… They did deposit something. I was given $10,000 one time… It was $30,000 [total] I think, and later they gave me another deposit but I don’t know how much that was. They told me that I was going to get $150,000. While I do not need money, what I am most worried about is a person [giving me their] word. I also have to pay my people, my coaches, physical trainer, everything and I’m putting it out of my pocket,” Maidana said.
The 35-year-old Maidana ended his career in 2014 on a two-fight losing streak, both losses to Floyd Mayweather Jr. The first bout between the two boxers saw Mayweather win by majority decision, prompting a rematch later in the year. Mayweather won the second bout by unanimous decision.
Maidana sports a 35-5 career record as a pro with 31 of those wins coming by knockout. Maidana has also won a world title at junior welterweight and has fought several world champions throughout his career, including Mayweather, Adrien Broner, Amir Khan and Erik Morales.
