Daniel Jacobs Overweight For Second Day Weight Check, Gets Fined; Fight Against Canelo Alvarez Still On
Hours before Canelo Alvarez and Daniel Jacobs meet inside the ring in a middleweight title unification, Jacobs failed a weight check the morning of the fight.
According to Dan Rafael of ESPN, per Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya, Jacobs came in at 173.6 pounds, well over the 170-pound rehydration limit the two fighters had in their contract for this fight. Alvarez, on the other hand, came in at 169 pounds this morning. Although Jacobs was well above the limit, he will still be eligible to win the unified WBA “Super,” WBC and IBF middleweight titles. However, Jacobs will have to take a financial hit that the ESPN report estimates to be $1 million.
Jacobs had no problem coming in at the 160-pound middleweight limit the day before, allowing him to potentially walk away with three of the four major world titles. Alvarez weighed in at 159.5 pounds during yesterday’s weigh-ins. The two fighters are set to headline a boxing card from the T-Mobile Arena that will be streamed on DAZN.
The news of Jacobs being over the 170-pound limit at the second-day weigh-ins does not come as a surprise. Jacobs previously said he would be okay with the financial penalties that come with missing weight the day of the fight and told DAZN earlier this week that it won’t play a factor into their fight.
“I think it’s absurd. The IBF normally rules for their title fights that you have to weigh-in at 170, within 10 pounds, the next morning, but if it’s for a unification then they out-rule that, so they don’t make that an actual case. But Golden Boy implemented that, so they can have somewhat of an advantage. I don’t know why they did it, but I think they think I’m the bigger man and they want to neutralize me as much as they can. Regardless into it because in my last fight, I had to follow those same rules and I came in to the ring healthy and strong and I look forward to being in my best version on Saturday night. So if you’re trying to prevent me from going to 180, 185 pounds, I’m still going to eat the day after the weigh-ins so I’m still going to be big and strong. Canelo is going to face a really big middleweight, a skilled middleweight,” Jacobs recently said at the Grand Arrivals.
Fightful will have live coverage of the entire card as well as have a live stream of the prelim card live at this link.
