Canelo Alvarez vs. Daniel Jacobs: Unified WBA “Super,” WBC and IBF Middleweight Titles
Round 1: Canelo throws a jab, but neither man is really active in the first minute of the fight. The crowd serenades the T-Mobile Arena with “Canelo!” chants. Canelo lands a right hand to the body and is chasing Jacobs throughout the round. Not much in this round as both men are trying to find their range and ease into a rhythm. Late in the round, Jacobs does throw a three-punch combination to the body, but those punches are blocked.
Fightful scored round 1 for Jacobs 10-9
Round 2: Jacobs starts to use the jab before working the body. Jacobs throws three more jabs, then blocks a left hook from Canelo. Canelo lands a couple of jabs that pushes Jacobs back, followed by a left hook from Canelo. Both men exchange body shots with each champion landing something. Jacobs answers back with a combination of his own. Canelo throws another combination at Jacobs late in the round.

Round 3: Canelo is cutting off the ring for Jacobs as Canelo starts to land more punches. Canelo lands a big left hook upstairs as Jacobs defends against the ropes. Jacobs connects with a three-punch combination upstairs that moves Canelo’s head back. Both men clinch as they each throw body shots. Jacobs digs in and lands a couple of shots to Canelo’s body.

Round 4: Canelo throws a left hook to the body as Jacobs continues to utilize the jab as his main method of offense. Jacobs tags Canelo with a right hand upstairs. Canelo throws a three-punch combination upstairs that Jacobs blocks. Canelo lands a right hand to the side of Jacobs’ head and then a left hook upstairs. Canelo throws a couple of left jabs upstairs as the Mexican fighter is feeling more comfortable as the fight progresses.
Fightful scored round 4 for Canelo 10-9
Round 5: Jacobs tries to throw more punches, but Canelo manages to dodge those punches and counter well with hooks to the body. Canelo barely connects on two straight left jabs. Jacobs lands a right hook upstairs, but it doesn’t do much to shake off Canelo’s confidence. Canelo responds with a counter left jab. Late in the round, Canelo throws a 1-2 combination upstairs.

Round 6: Jacobs continues to throw more jabs, but Canelo’s footwork continues to excel and allow him to not get hit. Jacobs does manage to hit Canelo with a left hook to the chin, arguably, Jacobs’ best punch of the night. Canelo throws a couple of hooks to the body.

Round 7: Canelo lands a series of shots to start the round and forcing Jacobs to run away from the fight. Jacobs is up against the ropes and lands a counter right hand after getting hit with multiple body punches by Canelo. Jacobs manages to push Canelo to the ropes and he lands a combination of body punches of his own. Both men clinch with about 30 seconds to go. The round ends with Canelo landing a couple of shots upstairs.

Round 8: Canelo throws a couple of left hooks to the body. Jacobs defends well throughout this first round, blocking most of Canelo’s offense. The two fighters exchange body shots for a brief moment nearly halfway through the round. Canelo barely connects a left hand and dodges a left hook upstairs. Jacobs works the body, which forces Canelo to retaliate and throw a combination of his own. Canelo breaks down Jacobs defense and lands another series of body shots. This has been the best round of the fight thus far.

Round 9: Jacobs tries to work as a southpaw although that hasn’t really helped much against Canelo. Neither man threw a lot in the first half of the round, but afterwards Canelo throws a left hook upstairs. Jacobs lands a big shot upstairs that pushed the Mexican back. Jacobs starts landing the jab better as he changes stance to orthodox.

Round 10: Canelo lands a left hook upstairs, but eats a lot of punches from Jacobs and Jacobs is starting to gain some confidence. Canelo lands another hook upstairs, but Jacobs starts to throw more punches and is getting some more offense. Both men clinch, but Jacobs continues to throw more to the body.

Round 11: Jacobs keeps jabbing away upstairs and is now finding a way to dodge some of Canelo’s punches. Jacobs throws more to the body and Canelo is simply moving back and jabbing away at Jacobs. Jacobs is having more success working on the inside and even pressured Canelo to the corner late in the round.

Round 12: Both men trade shots to start the round and each champion gets a chance to land punches. Jacobs slips, but it is not ruled a knockdown and the fight is paused for referee Tony Weeks to dry up the canvas. Jacobs throws a two-punch combination and Canelo responds with three to the body. Jacobs throws a punch upstairs and Canelo answers back with a combination of his own. Canelo lands an uppercut to the body.
