Jon Fitch Hasn’t Made A Decision Yet About Retirement

Jon Fitch competed in the main event of Bellator 220, fighting Bellator Welterweight Champion Rory MacDonald to a majority draw.

The UFC veteran had been contemplating retirement before the event, but the fight result left Fitch on the fence when it comes to a decision.

“I’m on the fence about walking away,” he said after the event (via Dave Meltzer of MMA Fighting). “I’ve done a lot in this sport, Forty-two pro fights, two amateur fights, 17 years of training, and I started wrestling at nine. I’ve been banging heads for a long time. It’s up to me, how I feel. I want to get some picture and see how my body is holding up. I can’t straighten my arms. I’ve lost an inch in reach, and that’s not a good thing. But it’s fun. I have fun doing it.”

If Fitch did decide to end his professional MMA career, it would end a career that began in July of 2002.

Fitch won’t advance in the welterweight world grand prix due to the majority draw result, but Fitch thought he defeated MacDonald in their bout.

“I thought I did enough to win,” Fitch said. “The judges didn’t see it the way I saw it. Two judges had it a draw and one thought I won, so I thought I won. It was a good performance. I got a few stitches to take home with me. Going into the fifth, my corner told me we definitely had to win the round to seal the deal. I thought split decision, but I thought I did enough to win. The crowd reaction indicated they thought I won.”

MacDonald was allowed to advance in the welterweight world grand prix since he is the divisional champion and technically wasn’t defeated at Bellator 220.
