Jake Atlas: The Biggest Challenge For Gay Wrestlers Is Being Presented To Mainstream Audiences Openly

Jake Atlas speaks his mind about openly gay wrestlers in the sport of pro wrestling.

The reigning PCW ULTRA Light Heavyweight Champion Jake Atlas is one of a handful of represenatives of the LGBTQ community that are openly gay professional wrestlers. He is joined by the likes of Sonya Deville, Mike Parrow, Anthony Bowens, Darren Young and more names. Atlas came out in early 2018 and shared with the world that he was longer hiding who he is. Atlas wants the sport to get a point where a gay wrestler winning a title is not a headline and it becomes a norm.

He spoke with ‘Outsports’ to chat about the toughest challenges for the LGBTQ community in pro wrestling and stated that one of the tougher challenges is being presented openly to a mainstream audience without that fear being attached to the situation. He is hoping to be on the front line of that movement and wants to inspire others to not back down from their dreams because of their fears.

“The biggest challenge we face is being able to be presented openly and without fear to the mainstream audience,” he says. “I hope to be at the forefront of this progress as I begin to build some more steam in my professional career to get more eyes and attention on our talents. I want us to get to a point where becoming a gay champion isn’t a headline, it becomes the norm,” he says. “So any other LGBTQ kid that comes after us can see that nothing is holding them back from following their dreams.”
