Exclusive: Phil Davis Has No Immediate Plans For Heavyweight Division

Phil Davis pushes his pursuit to regain the Bellator Light Heavyweight title at Bellator 220 when he takes on Liam McGeary. But many Bellator 205 pounders have ended up making the more to heavyweight.

Ryan Bader, Linton Vassell, King Mo — all names that Davis is very well acquainted with, have made the move. Despite that fact, Phil Davis doesn’t have plans in the immediate future to jump to the division that hosts the likes of Fedor, Josh Barnett, and Sergei Kharitonov.

“As of right now, I’m sticking to 205. If I did make the move to heavyweight, it’d be a permanent move. In order for me to do heavyweight the way that I want to, I’d need to gain a little bit of weight, but not so much that I’d be slow. I feel like I have an endurance advantage over everyone I fight. That would be something I’d look to exploit. Right now, I’m staying at light heavyweight and beating up smaller guys here,” said Davis.

Perhaps more surprising is that at his frame, Davis has never competed at any division besides light heavyweight. He’s also never been finished, a topic we broached with him. That “knockout” button hasn’t been pressed.

“I have no button, sir. I’m buttonless. I’m a t-shirt. It’s about knowing where you’re good and corralling that situation,” said Davis. “It’s making sure I control the action inside the cage.”

Davis will rematch Liam McGeary at Bellator 220 at the SAP Center in San Jose, California on April 27. Fightful will have full, live coverage and discussion of the event, which also features two title fights and Ben Henderson in action.
