Exclusive: Amir Khan: My Skills And IQ, Not Size Or Power, Will Beat Terence Crawford

Amir Khan may have a size advantage over Terence Crawford, but that alone won’t be enough for him to win the WBO welterweight title when they meet on April 20.

Khan is the naturally bigger fighter and is more established at 147 pounds than Crawford, who is entering this fight as a welterweight for the third time in his career. But for those who believe Khan’s physical gifts will be the difference maker against Crawford, the British fighter believes that won’t be what will win him the WBO welterweight title.

In a recent media conference call, Khan said he will have to use his boxing IQ and overall skills and be at his absolute best to stand a chance against Crawford. According to Khan, size won’t be what will decide the fight.

“I can’t take this lightly. This is going to be a tough fight. He is a very good skilled fighter with power. He’s durable, he moves well, and he boxes well. For me to win this fight, I have to be on my ‘A’ game and not make any mistakes, but he is still maybe quite new in the welterweight division. But you can see he is quite filled out, and for the welterweight division, his height is good. I am not going to go in there thinking I am stronger and a physically bigger fighter. I am going to in there and use my skills to win this fight. That’s what is going to win this fight – not the size or the power – it’s going to be my IQ and my skills,” Khan said.

The two men are set to square off with the WBO title on the line in the main event of an ESPN pay-per-view card. Fightful also got to speak with Top Rank CEO Bob Arum about the thought process on making the fight a pay-per-view event and you can read more about it at this link.

Fightful will have live coverage of the fight, as well as the rest of the entire card, live from Madison Square Garden.
