Dustin Poirier Says Featherweight No Longer An Option, May Consider Welterweight In The Future
The lightweight fighter previously competed at featherweight, but don’t expect him to drop down to 145 pounds anymore.
“I could never make 145 again, and I never will,” Poirier said at the UFC 236 media day (via Mike Bohn of MMA Junkie). “If anything, I’ll go up. Definitely a possibility. My body is just getting heavier, more dense. Things change as you get older, and ’55 is not fun to make anymore. Not that fighting has to be fun 100 percent of the time, but I just want to be healthy.”
Poirier has competed at both featherweight and lightweight in the UFC, earning an overall record of 16-4-0-1NC in the promotion.
One weight class that fans may see Poirier competing at in the future could be welterweight.
“Those guys are so long,” Poirier said. “It’s not so much the size – well, (Tyron) Woodley’s size is big – but I stopped Pettis, and he just stopped Stephen Thompson. MMA math doesn’t make sense, but (I could do it).”
UFC 236 takes place on Saturday, April 13 from the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia with Max Holloway and Dustin Poirier headlining. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, with a post-show podcast to follow.
