Gilberto Ramirez: I’d Return To Super Middleweight For A Big Fight Like Canelo And GGG
Gilberto Ramirez’s time as a super middleweight may be over but hasn’t completely ruled out going back to 168 pounds.
As he is is set to make his light heavyweight debut later tonight, he talks about what ot will take to go back down to 168 pounds. Ramirez stated he wants big fights, and would go back down for someone like Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin.
“It had become more difficult for me to make 168 pounds. I spent most of my career at that weight and my body was maturing. I’d return to super middleweight if there was a really big fight available to me, like Canelo or Golovkin,” Ramirez said during a media workout this week.
A fight against either man could be difficult to make given that Ramirez fights on ESPN and both Alvarez and Golovkin, who are competing at middleweight, fight on DAZN. Alvarez does have some experience fighting at super middleweight as he defeated Rocky Fielding last year to win the WBA “Regular” super middleweight title.
There is also the possibility of a unification fight between Ramirez, the WBO super middleweight champion, and WBA “Super” champion Callum Smith as both men are interested in the fight.
Ramirez will make his light heavyweight debut on the undercard of Vasiliy Lomachenko’s unified WBA and WBO lightweight title defense against Anthony Crolla on ESPN+. Ramirez will take on former title challenger Tommy Karpency. Ramirez will make a decision on what weight class to stay at after the fight.
