Two Title Fights Taking Place In Spain On June 8
A pair of title fights is coming to Spain this summer with one of them being for the European featherweight champion.
Andoni Gago and Jesus Sanchez will face off in the main event of a boxing card in Bilbao, Spain on June 8 with the vacant EBU European 126-pound title on the line. The fight will crown the third champion to have held the belt within the last year.
Gago is unbeaten in his last six fights after being stopped by former world champion Lee Selby in the ninth round back in 2017. Gago won a number of non-world titles throughout his career, including the Spanish, IBF International and EBU European Union featherweight titles and a win over Sanchez would put him back in position to eventually challenge for his first world title.
Sanchez, winner of his last nine fights, has also won the EBU European Union and Spanish featherweight titles. Sanchez is currently ranked ranked No. 11 by the IBF at featherweight.
The co-main event of the card will see Spanish welterweight champion Aitor Nieto defend his title for the fourth time against Jon Miguez. Nieto has held the Spanish 147-pound title since May 2018 and sports a 7-2-1 record in his last 10 fights. Miguez is a rising welterweight prospect who has won all 10 fights, five of which have ended from inside the distance. Miguez last fought in February, defeating Vasyl Kurasov with a 10-round unanimous decision victory to win the interim WBC Youth World welterweight title.
