Leonard Ellerbe: Gervonta Davis Is Going To Defend His Title In Baltimore Next

WBA super featherweight champion Gervonta Davis appears to be heading home for his next title defense.

According to Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe, Davis will defend his title in his hometown of Baltimore this summer. This comes via video interview with FightHype.com, essentially confirming an earlier report from Lance Pugmire of the Los Angeles Times that stated Davis would fight in July.

“[Davis] is fighting and he’s going to be fighting in the summertime. I’m very, very excited for him to bring a big fight home. We’re working on it now and it’s going to be a great event,” Ellerbe said.

Davis has held the WBA title since last April when he defeated Jesus Cuellar to become a two-time world champion. Davis remained inactive for the rest of 2018 but returned to action in February, knocking out Hugo Ruiz in the first round to retain the title. Originally, Davis was supposed to face Abner Mares in the main event of a PBC card that was televised on Showtime, but Mares suffered a detached retina in late January, making way for Ruiz to come in as a replacement.

The unbeaten Davis is looking to be more active in 2019 after just one fight in 2018. Davis is targeting at least three title fights this year, something he hasn’t done since his breakout 2017 when he won the IBF title. Davis lost the IBF title at the scales right before a title defense against Francisco Fonseca on the Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor card.
