Marty Scurll: Lately, Wrestling Has Been About “Making History” Without Letting It Happen Authentically
Marty Scurll speaks ahead of Saturday’s G1 Supercard.
This Saturday at Madison Square Garden, Marty Scurll has a chance to make history when he gets a shot at the ROH World Title in a triple threat ladder match against Jay Lethal and Matt Taven. Scurll recently sat down with Sports Illustrated and was asked about his thoughts on the bout.
“I feel a lot of wrestling in the last few years has been about trying to ‘make history’ without letting it happen authentically,” stated Scurll. “If I make history, I don’t need to blab about it. My first concern is not ‘making history,’ it’s myself and becoming world champion. That’s all I care about. I’m The Villain, after all.”
Scurll has never won the ROH World Title and Saturday will mark the first time a non-WWE promotion will run Madison Square Garden in nearly 60 years. The ladder match became famous inside MSG at WrestleMania X when Shawn Michaels and Razor Ramon battled for the Intercontinental Title.
Scurll continued, “I’m not going to lie and say that ladder matches are my specialty. Far from that, but I know there isn’t anything I won’t do to become world champion. I’ve waited too long. If not now, when? I can’t think of a more authentic story going in to this weekend than this. I think we’re going to blow the roof off the place and this show will be talked about for a very long time to come. People aren’t going to want to miss it.”
