Floyd Mayweather: There’s No Rush For Gervonta Davis To Fight Vasiliy Lomachenko

Although Gervonta “Tank” Davis and Vasiliy Lomachenko are champions in different weight classes, calls for the two of them to fight each other from the boxing community continue to persist.

After Davis knocked out Hugo Ruiz in the first round of their WBA “Super” super featherweight world title fight on February 9, Davis and promoter Floyd Mayweather Jr. was asked about a potential fight against Lomachenko. Mayweather would go on to state that there is no rush for the two boxers to fight each other but also called the 30-year-old Lomachenko old.

“Like I said before, we’re not going to call any particular fighter out and it’s not like we’re ducking and dodging anyone. Lomachenko has to fight as many fights as possible extremely quick because he’s very, very old. ‘Tank’ is probably 10, 11 years younger than Lomachenko and Lomachenko will be 40 years old before you know it. There is no rush for ‘Tank’ to fight him… Lomachenko is a hell of a fighter and I like Lomachenko. After ‘Tank’ went out there and beat [former WBO lightweight champion Jose Pedraza], Lomachenko fought ‘Tank’s’ leftovers and went the distance,” Mayweather said.

At one point, Lomachenko and Davis were world champions at super featherweight, but the two never met in what would have been a battle between two of boxing’s top rising stars. Lomachenko moved up in weight to 135 pounds in 2018 and become a unified WBA and WBO champion while Davis remained at 130 pounds.
