Mairis Briedis vs. Krzysztof Glowacki Set For WBSS Semifinal Bout In June

The first World Boxing Super Series cruiserweight semifinal matchup of the second season has a date and venue.

Former WBC champion Mairis Briedis will take on current interim WBO champion Krzysztof Glowacki on June 15 in Briedis’ hometown of Riga, Latvia. The fight will be streamed on DAZN in the United States as is the case with every World Boxing Super Series fight this season.

Briedis will return to the place he suffered his first pro loss which was in January 2018. Briedis, the WBC champion at the time, lost a majority decision to eventual tournament winner and current undisputed champion Oleksandr Usyk in the semifinals of the first World Boxing Super Series cruiserweight tournament. Briedis bounced back and won two straight, including one against Noel Mikaelian in the quarterfinals of this current iteration of the WBSS cruiserweight tournament.

Glowacki, a former WBO world champion, entered the tournament on a four-fight win streak and won the interim WBO title in the quarterfinals by defeating Maksim Vlasov. Glowacki, who sports a 31-1 record, will fight in Riga for the second time in his pro career.

This is the second overall semifinal bout to have a date set. The first one was announced last week when the tournament announced that WBC Silver junior welterweight champion Josh Taylor will fight IBF world champion Ivan Baranchyk on May 18 at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland.

The other cruiserweight semifinal fight is one between former WBA champion Yunier Dorticos and rising star Andrew Tabiti. The WBSS also has a bantamweight tournament, but it has not announced dates or venues for either of any of those fights.
