Brock Lesnar’s Summerslam Opponent Is Confirmed

“The Beast” Brock Lesnar is set for his return……about a month and a half after his return. Only in pro wrestling and MMA.

Just days before his UFC 200 fight with highly-ranked Heavyweight Mark Hunt, WWE announced that Lesnar would be facing the returning Randy Orton at WWE Summerslam. WWE revealed the news on this week’s episode of Smackdown, after the info leaked to a Canadian Smackdown after-show that aired on Wednesday night.

Orton has been out of action for nine months, as he sustained a serious shoulder injury last October. 2013 was Orton’s last full year in the ring with the company.

The result of Lesnar’s UFC 200 fight will likely play a role in the way that he’s booked for this event. The WWE started to run Youtube videos on Thursday promoting the bout, after being completely silent following their initial announcement after UFC 199.

Neither Orton or Brock Lesnar have commented on their upcoming matchup. The two last faced off on a September 2002 edition of Smackdown towards the beginning of both of their careers. Lesnar had already become WWE Champion by this point, and made short work of the future “Legend Killer,” defeating him in just over five minutes. Lesnar and Orton also teamed together on a WWF house show before they made their televised debuts, and were beaten by Tommy Dreamer and Stevie Richards.

WWE Summerslam takes place on August 21, 2016 from the Barclays Center from Brooklyn, New York. Fightful.com will have full coverage of the event. Lesnar will also be in action against Mark Hunt at UFC 200 on July 9 on pay-per-view.
