Jaime Munguia: “The Plan Is To Move Up To 160 Pounds In About A Year”

WBO junior middleweight champion Jaime Munguia outlined his plan to unify the division and then take over another weight class.

The 22-year-old champion, who has a title defense on January 26, said in a press release that he hopes to eventually get a unification done after this next fight and a fight against mandatory challenger Dennis Hogan. Hogan became the mandatory challenger for Munguia’s title after winning his latest fight in Australia back in December.

“After this fight, it looks like I will have a WBO mandatory bout against Dennis Hogan. But I would still like to unify the titles at 154 pounds with the other champions. We will resolve anything that is put in front of us,” Munguia said.

Munguia had the most successful year as a pro in 2018, winning his first world title back in May and then making two successful title defenses, one of which took place on the pay-per-view card for Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin 2 this past September.

But Munguia is planning on moving up in weight, likely in 2020. Munguia, who sports a large frame as a junior middleweight, said he has no issues in making weight, but feels that he can move up in weight and potentially challenge for more titles.

“The plan is to move up to 160 pounds in about a year. We’re fine making weight now. I have no problems, but I feel I can move up and fight in other divisions. My body is such that I could even go up to 168 pounds,” Munguia said.

For now, Munguia is focused on his title defense on January 26 against Takeshi Inoue. That fight will headline a DAZN card from the Toyota Center in Houston.
